ABOUT MICOM

MICOM is a collaborative initiative funded by the CDC's Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics that brings together the University of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). We are dedicated to developing and integrating advanced modeling and data analytics tools into public health practice to address both public health emergencies and ongoing infectious disease threats.

MICOM X INSIGHTNET

INTEGRATORS

MICOM is an Insight Net Integration Center. We develop and deploy practical tools for real-world public health challenges. We work with decision-makers at the local, state, and national levels to develop these tools, ensuring they have the resources needed for effective response and management during outbreaks.

Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI)

The AAI Sub-Core uses advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence to forecast, predict and identify patterns in infectious diseases dynamics.

Subject Matter Experts (SME)​

​

The SME Core provides strategic input on methods, data, and existing public health practice. This core offers key expertise to respond to disease threats and, with the leadership and integration cores, prepares material on emerging threats that can be used by local, state, and federal public health agencies.

Health Equity (HE)​

​

The HE Core identifies and addresses existing and emerging health inequities, and develops approaches to anticipate and prevent future disparities. It provides best practice recommendations for data collection, cleaning, analysis, and communications.

Integration and Translation (I&T) â€‹

​

The I&T Core ensures that MICOM projects and products are relevant and useful to our partners in government and communities. This core uses qualitative research techniques to understand the needs of stakeholders and guide the development and design of tools to meet these needs.

Preparedness​

​

The Preparedness Core focuses on developing and implementing response plans for public health emergencies, including exercises to test and develop our emergency response capacity, and coordinating the SME core in preparedness and response efforts. It also hosts regular horizon scanning meetings to assess the landscape of infectious disease threats.

Tools, Visualizations and Dashboards (TVD)​

The TVD core is focused on leveraging information, technology, and user research to develop fast and scalable tools that support public health response efforts. By using user driven design and modern development best practices, this core ensures these tools are adaptable, modular, and effective from design to full implementation.

Data Pipelines & Standardization (DPS)

​

The DPS Core streamlines the transfer, storage, and integration of diverse data sources to enhance disease tracking and outbreak response. This core supports analysis and visualization efforts across the Center and provides high quality data to MICOM partners.

Modeling and Analysis Practice Models (MAMP)​

​

The MAMP core delivers responsive, accurate models and data analysis to inform intervention strategies, using transmission modeling and machine learning to forecast disease spread. It works closely with other cores and our state and local partners to ensure timely availability of analytics to MDHHS and the public.
